Why You Should Consider Direct Selling in 2026

104 million people in 55 countries are doing this, and the research on what they actually gain is more interesting than the argument about it. The global case for starting a small stream this year.

Why You Should Consider Direct Selling in 2026

Most arguments about direct selling are held between two people who have never looked at the numbers. The numbers are public, they are large, and they describe something far more ordinary than either side wants it to be.

In December 2025 the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations published its annual count of the channel. Across fifty-five markets, 104.3 million people were working as independent representatives. Just over 72% of them were women. Together they moved $163.9 billion in retail sales, and the share of markets that were growing rose from 23% in 2022 to 45% in 2024.

That is not a pitch. It is a census. And it describes a way of earning that a hundred million people have quietly chosen, in countries with wildly different economies, using wildly different products.

The scale nobody puts on a poster

The WFDSA report is the closest thing this channel has to an official set of books. Roger Barnett, its chairman, summarised where the movement is: "The U.S. continues to be the dominant market in the world, but we're also seeing growth in key markets like Brazil, India and China." Shaila Manyam, the federation's executive director, put the shape of it plainly: "Direct selling is a resilient and appealing pathway for entrepreneurs around the world, especially women, and more men are becoming involved as well."

Twenty-one markets now do more than a billion dollars a year through this channel. That is not one company or one country having a good decade. That is a distribution model that keeps working across languages, currencies and economies that have almost nothing else in common.

What makes the number interesting is not its size. It is who is inside it. A hundred million people is too many to be a single kind of person with a single kind of motive.

What people say they actually got

The most useful research I have found on this was not written by a company. Robert A. Peterson, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, ran a study for the Direct Selling Education Foundation covering 495 current and 465 former direct sellers. He measured fourteen business and professional skills and thirteen personal life skills, then asked people whether the experience had improved them.

More than three quarters agreed on both counts. Their professional skills improved, and the skills carried over into their personal lives. Broken out, the numbers are specific enough to be worth reading slowly. Problem solving improved for 90% of men and 76% of women in the study. Entrepreneurial skill: 90% and 78%. Critical thinking: 88% and 74%. Time management: 87% and 77%. Decision making: 87% and 78%. Being at ease in front of an audience: 84% and 71%. Managing money: 83% and 73%. Coping with stress: 85% and 69%.

Then there is the finding that reframes the whole conversation. Peterson tested twelve possible reasons for joining. The most common, given by 81%, was this: "I believed that the products are of such value that I wanted to share them with my friends, neighbors, and the public." The least common of all twelve, at 35%, was wanting a full-time working career.

People do not mostly walk into this looking for a salary. They walk in because they liked something and wanted to pass it on, and a large majority walk out better at speaking, deciding, planning and handling their own money. Those skills do not expire if you stop. They are yours.

Three people who started with very little

Mary Kay Ash spent twenty-five years in sales and then watched a man she had trained get promoted above her at twice her pay. She resigned in 1963 and sat down to write a book about everything she had learned. What came out instead was a business plan. On 13 September 1963 she opened a cosmetics company in Dallas with five thousand dollars of life savings and the help of her twenty-year-old son, Richard Rogers. Her husband, who was to run the administrative side, had died of a heart attack one month before launch. She was advised to cancel. She opened anyway, and built the company around a simple idea: that a woman should be able to set her own ceiling and her own hours.

In Brazil, Natura built its business on the same logic and took it to a scale that is difficult to picture from here. More than 1.2 million consultants form its distribution network, most of them women, many in places where formal employment was never really on offer. The company paired the opportunity with financial literacy training and access to micro-credit, which is the part that gets left out of most tellings. The selling was the visible half. The training was the half that changed how people handled money for the rest of their lives.

The third person is my mother. Three years ago money was tight in Brazil, someone told her about Natura, and she signed up wanting a little extra. She had never sold anything before and she carried every doubt a person can carry. She has not missed a single cycle since, and she is on the third level of six. I wrote her whole story in the consultant who never missed a cycle, and it is the least dramatic success story you will read this year, which is exactly why I trust it.

The failure argument, taken seriously

The strongest thing people say against this channel is that plenty of people who try it do not build anything. That is true, and it is worth saying out loud rather than stepping around.

It is also true of restaurants, of trades, of consultancies, and of every corner shop that opened with somebody's savings in it. It is true of careers. People are made redundant, get passed over, spend a decade in a role that leads nowhere. We do not conclude from any of that that opening a business is a trick or that having a job is a con. We conclude that some things work out and some do not, and that the person choosing carefully has better odds than the person choosing on impulse.

There is a second thing worth noticing. When people describe the structure of this channel as a pyramid, they rarely look at the org chart of the company they work for, where one person sits at the top, a few sit under them, and the width increases all the way down to the floor. The difference is not the shape. The difference is that in one of them you can start on Monday without anyone's permission.

So the sensible posture is neither the breathless yes nor the bitter no. It is this: some will, some won't, and this is not for everyone. Choose the product first, start small enough that a bad outcome costs you nothing you needed, and let it be one stream among several rather than the plan.

Why 2026 is a reasonable year to look

Three things line up right now in a way they did not five years ago.

The entry cost has collapsed. There is no van of inventory, no minimum order to carry, no territory to buy. Most of what used to require a garage full of product is now a link.

The work has become asynchronous, which changes who can do it. You can write something once and let it answer the same question for a hundred people while you sleep. That is not a promise about money and I am not making one. It is a statement about how the work is shaped now, and it means that people who would have been terrible at the 1990s version of this can be quite good at the 2026 version. I wrote about that specifically in direct selling for introverts.

And the money is already leaving your account. This is the part that took me longest to see. You are buying supplements, or skincare, or coffee, or cleaning products, every month, from a company that will never know your name. Routing some of that spending through something you own is not a new expense. It is the same expense, pointed somewhere else. That logic is the whole foundation, and I set it out properly in the quiet logic of buying from yourself.

Which brings me to how I would start if I were starting today. Pick the product before you look at anything else. If you would not buy it with no opportunity attached at all, stop there. Everything downstream depends on that one answer, and it is the filter that removes most of the bad decisions before they are made. The full checklist I used is in how to choose a network marketing company, and the question of whether it suits you at all is in is network marketing worth it.

Then start smaller than feels satisfying. One stream, no timeline, no announcement to anybody. Let it compound or let it not.

For me that turned out to be MAKE Wellness, which opened in Canada on 1 July 2026, so anyone starting here is building as the market opens rather than arriving late to a full room. If you want to see how the business side is actually structured before you talk to anyone, I put the whole thing on one page: take the preview. No call, no pressure, and you can read it at two in the morning if that is when you have time.

And if the business side is not what brought you here, the wellness quiz is the better door. It asks what you are actually dealing with and points you at something useful, with nothing attached.

Is direct selling actually growing, or is that just marketing? The WFDSA's December 2025 report put global retail sales at $163.9 billion across 55 markets, with the proportion of markets showing growth rising from 23% in 2022 to 45% in 2024. Sales were broadly flat year over year, so the channel is stable overall and expanding in specific places, with Brazil, India and China named as the strongest.

What do people gain if they do not build a large business? Skills, according to the University of Texas research. More than three quarters of sellers surveyed said their professional abilities improved and that those improvements carried into their personal lives, across problem solving, time management, decision making, public speaking and managing money. Those transfer to anything you do next.

Why are most direct sellers women? 72.1% of independent representatives worldwide are women, and the historical reason is straightforward: the model offered control over hours and earnings in eras and places where formal employment offered women very little of either. Mary Kay Ash founded her company in 1963 for that exact reason, and Natura built a network of more than 1.2 million consultants in Brazil on the same principle.

Is this a good idea if I need money quickly? No, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling badly. This suits someone who is redirecting spending they already have and is willing to build slowly. If you need income this month, this is the wrong tool and a second job is the right one.

Do I need to be an extrovert? No. The modern version of this work is largely written and asynchronous, which suits quiet people better than the in-person version ever did. I wrote the full argument in direct selling for introverts.
