What's Really Inside Your Energy Drink (I Checked the Science)
A 16 oz Monster has 54 grams of sugar. A Rockstar has 63. Today MAKE Wellness launched ENERGIZED+, and I spent the morning reading actual studies about what energy drinks do to your body, then read the ENERGIZED+ label line by line.

Today is launch day for ENERGIZED+, the new energy product from MAKE Wellness. Two new flavors, Peach and Power Punch, and my feed is full of orange stick packs.
Before I tell you why I switched, I want to show you what I found when I actually looked into the drinks most of us grew up on. Not marketing. Not vibes. Ingredients, peer-reviewed studies, and medical records. Then I read the ENERGIZED+ label line by line, so the other side of this comparison comes straight from the company, not from me.
Let's start with the label on the cans
Here is what is actually in the three best-known energy drinks, per serving:
Monster Energy, 16 oz: 160 mg caffeine, 54 g sugar, 370 mg sodium, 230 calories. Plus taurine, guarana extract, ginseng, L-carnitine, B vitamins, and sucralose. (US labels do not disclose the taurine amount. The Canadian regulated label lists 2,000 mg.)
Red Bull, 8.4 oz: 80 mg caffeine, 26 g sugar, 1,000 mg taurine, B vitamins, 110 calories.
Rockstar, 16 oz: 160 mg caffeine, 63 g sugar, B vitamins at 100% of daily value each, around 260 calories.
Now translate the sugar. 54 grams is about 13.5 teaspoons. 63 grams is almost 16 teaspoons. The American Heart Association says women should stay under 25 grams of added sugar a day and men under 36. One Monster gives a woman 216% of her entire day's limit. One Rockstar gives her 252%. The World Health Organization's ideal limit is 25 grams for anyone. One can blows past it before 9am.
That is not a scare tactic. It is division.

Your heart notices. A 2025 systematic review by Mandato and colleagues looked at 37 studies with nearly 1,600 people. Across those studies, energy drinks were linked to higher heart rate (in 61% of the studies), higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and a longer QT interval, the part of the heartbeat that, when stretched too far, raises arrhythmia risk. A 2019 randomized trial by Shah and colleagues, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, found the QT interval stretched about 18 to 20 milliseconds after energy drinks versus 12 with placebo, along with higher blood pressure. These are short-term effects, measured in hours. Nobody has proven what decades of daily use do, and I will not pretend otherwise. But the short-term signal is consistent.
The crash is chemistry, not weakness. You drink 54 grams of sugar and a big caffeine dose. Blood sugar spikes, insulin answers, caffeine blocks the sleepiness signal for a few hours, then it wears off and the bill arrives. That 3pm second can is not a character flaw. It is the product working as designed.
Your teeth pay too. A study in General Dentistry found energy drinks caused roughly twice the enamel damage of sports drinks in lab testing. Their pH runs as low as 2.36. Enamel starts dissolving below 5.5.

Health authorities land in the same place: about 400 mg of caffeine a day is the upper bound for healthy adults. The FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and Health Canada all agree. Two 16 oz Monsters get you to 320 mg before lunch. Older Monster cans said "limit 3 cans a day," which is 480 mg, already past the line. The American Academy of Pediatrics says adolescents 12 to 18 should stay under 100 mg a day, and that energy drinks are, in their words, never appropriate for children or teens. The FDA estimates seizures can occur around 1,200 mg of caffeine consumed quickly.

US emergency department visits involving energy drinks went from about 10,000 in 2007 to nearly 21,000 in 2011, according to the federal DAWN surveillance program. Most were adverse reactions to the drink alone, and one in ten led to hospitalization.
Two deaths you should know about, reported factually. In 2017, 16-year-old Davis Cripe of South Carolina died after a latte, a large Mountain Dew, and an energy drink within two hours. The coroner called it a caffeine-induced cardiac event causing a probable arrhythmia. His autopsy found no heart condition and no drugs or alcohol. In 2011, 14-year-old Anais Fournier died after two 24 oz Monsters in 24 hours. Her death was attributed to cardiac arrhythmia from caffeine toxicity.
The FDA's adverse-event system has logged dozens of deaths associated with energy products since 2004. I want to be precise: these are associations in reports, not proven cause and effect in every case. There are also published case reports of acute hepatitis linked to multi-can daily habits, with the B vitamin niacin as the suspected ingredient. Rare, but documented in BMJ Case Reports.
And the marketing never stopped aiming young. A California lawsuit alleged Monster marketed to children as young as six through its "Monster Army" network. Surveys show more than 20% of American high school seniors drink energy drinks daily. That is why Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, and Sweden restrict sales to minors. The US still has no federal age limit.
The other approach: ENERGIZED+
Now the other side, and I am using the company's own words and the actual product label here.
ENERGIZED+ runs on what MAKE Wellness calls E+MC² Technology, and each letter stands for something specific:
E is Energy. It is designed to support healthy energy production at the cellular level, including ATP production and mitochondrial energy, plus sustained mental energy and alertness.
M is Motivation. It supports motivation, mental drive, cognitive performance, and the neurotransmitter pathways involved in energy.
C² is Cellular Communication. It uses natural peptide signaling, including the company's Fatigue Fighter Peptides, to support mental stamina and sustained performance.
Here is what is actually in one stick pack, from the Supplement Facts panel I read today. 100 mg of natural caffeine from green coffee bean extract. A 1,330.5 mg E+MC² blend: L-tyrosine, taurine, glycine, Fatigue Fighter Peptides (hydrolyzed whey peptide isolate with leucine, isoleucine, valine, and phenylalanine), Gotu Kola extract, and inositol. Then a serious vitamin lineup: 300 mg of vitamin C, a full B complex including 60 mg of niacin and 15 mg of B6, plus choline, zinc, copper, and vitamins A and E. It is sweetened with steviol glycosides Reb M, from the stevia leaf, and colored with fruit and vegetable juice. The panel lists no sugar line and no calorie line at all.
The company's stated goal is a more balanced energy experience that supports mind and body together, rather than relying on stimulation alone. Their product card sums it up as clean, crash-free energy for sustained performance. One packet in 8 to 10 ounces of water a day. That is the whole ritual.
The launch details: Peach and Power Punch, in new 15-count boxes you can mix and match, or a 2-pack for a full month supply. A single box is $39.99, $35.99 on Subscribe and Save. The 2-pack is $69.99.

I am not a doctor, and this is not medical advice. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, or you are pregnant, talk to your doctor about caffeine, whatever the source.
But the math is the math. I read the studies, then I read the label, and I switched. If you want to try what I am drinking, my link is here. Peach is the one I keep reaching for.
