A Month in Brazil, and What I Found When I Came Back

I went home to Brazil for most of July and barely worked the business. I came back to two new people on my team, and here is what that actually taught me about building slowly.

I left for Brazil half expecting to come home to nothing. That is not what happened, and the reason why is less impressive and more useful than it sounds.

I was gone for most of July. Not a working trip with a laptop in the corner of a hotel room, an actual trip home, the kind where the days belong to other people and you are a son and a brother before you are anything else. I did not post on a schedule. I did not follow up well. For most of that month I did not open the business at all. And when I got back and finally looked, the honest report is this: I had not lost ground, and there were two new people, one customer and one affiliate.

Two. That is the whole headline, and I am going to be careful with it, because the temptation in this industry is to inflate exactly this kind of moment.

What "not really working" actually looked like

I want to be precise, because "I took a month off and my business grew" is the exact sentence a certain kind of person posts over a photo of a beach, and I do not want to be that.

I was in Brazil with family. Time went where family time goes. There were days I never opened my laptop, and stretches where the connection made it not worth trying. I answered messages late or not at all. If someone had needed me to be sharp and available in that window, I was neither. That is the real texture of it, and anyone telling you they run a business at full strength while genuinely being present with their family for a month is selling you something.

So no, I did not build anything in July. What I found out is what happens to a small thing when you stop pushing it, which turns out to be a more interesting question than what happens when you push.

The part that kept working was the part I had already written

Here is the mechanism, and it is not romantic.

The posts I had published before I left kept being read while I was gone. Someone found one, read it, went and read another, and eventually clicked through on their own time. That is not passive anything and I refuse to dress it up that way. It is just that writing has a shelf life, and a conversation does not. The work of a Tuesday in May was still doing its quiet job in the third week of July, because it was sitting on a page instead of disappearing into a feed.

That is the actual argument for building in public rather than working a contact list. Not that it is easier, it is slower and it is more work up front. But it accumulates in a way that outlasts your attention, and it keeps introducing you to people during the weeks you are not there. I said something similar about why the small streams matter more than the big one, and this month was the first time I watched it happen while I was not looking.

Two people, and the numbers I will not be showing you

One customer. One affiliate. That is what changed.

I am not going to tell you what either of those is worth, this month or any month, and it is worth saying why out loud. Partly it is a rule I hold myself to on this site. Mostly it is that an earnings figure from one person's odd month is the least useful thing I could hand you, and the industry is already drowning in them. I have said the money here is modest and slow and nothing about July changed that. If anything it confirmed it. Two people over a stretch that included a month of silence is not a rocket. It is a pulse.

What I will tell you is what it felt like, because that is the part I actually have. It felt like a normal thing happening at a normal speed. Nobody was persuaded. There was no call, no pitch, no urgency. Two people had been reading and watching for a while and arrived at their own conclusion at their own pace, which is the only version of this I want.

Why it felt natural, and the book that named it for me

In July the whole affiliate side of the company was reading The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann, which I wrote about in the July round-up. The idea from it that has stuck with me hardest is the one the authors call the Law of Value: your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.

I resisted that at first, if I am honest, because it reads like a poster. What changed my mind was noticing the order of operations in my own case. For months I wrote about sleep and training and the boring mechanics of building something on the side, and I linked to what I use, and almost nobody did anything about it. That felt like failure at the time. It was not. It was the only reason that later, while I was in another country and unreachable, two people had enough of a picture of me to decide on their own. The value had been given long before there was any payment to take.

Burg's version is a business parable and it proves nothing, so take it as a way of thinking rather than evidence. But it named something I had been doing without a word for it, and having a word for it made me stop apologising for how slow the front end is.

The strongest version of the objection

Let me give the counter its best shot rather than a weak one.

You could say this only worked because I had already spent a year writing, and that a person starting Monday has no shelf of posts to keep working for them while they are away. That is completely fair. It is the truest criticism of everything I have described, and I do not have a clever answer to it. The honest answer is yes, and that is the cost, and the front end of this is genuinely unrewarding for longer than most people will tolerate. If you want a thing that pays attention back to you in week one, this is not it.

The second objection is smaller: two people is not evidence of anything. Also fair. It is not a trend, it is an anecdote with a sample size of two, and I would tell you to distrust anyone who built a case on less.

What I would say against both is only this. Every version of this that lasts starts at a size that looks like nothing, and the people who quit almost always quit during the part where it looks like nothing. I am still in that part. I am just no longer worried that being away for a month undoes it.

If you are the one reading quietly

There is a decent chance you have been reading these for a while without doing anything, the way those two did. I am not going to push you off that. It is the right way to do it.

But if you have got to the point where you are curious rather than just interested, there are only two honest doors. One is that you want to try what I actually use, in which case you buy it like a normal customer and that is a complete and respectable ending, no team, no obligation, nothing else expected of you. The other is that the building side is what interests you, the writing and the slow accumulating and the small number of people, in which case there is a page that lays out how it really works with no income promises on it.

Most people who read this will do neither, and that is genuinely fine. A few will pick one. This is written for the few.

FAQ

Did the business really grow while you were away, or after you got back?

Both, and the distinction matters. The reading and the clicking happened while I was gone, because the posts were already published. The two decisions landed around the edges of the trip and just after it. What I can say cleanly is that a month of near silence did not set me back, which is not the same claim as "it grew while I slept."

Why won't you share the numbers?

Because a single person's earnings in one odd month tell you nothing about what yours would be, and this industry has done enormous damage with exactly that kind of screenshot. I would rather tell you the mechanism and let you judge it. If someone shows you their figures as the reason to join, that is the moment to slow down.

How long did it take before anyone said yes?

Months of writing before the first person did anything at all. I am not going to soften that. The front end of this is long and quiet, and if that is a dealbreaker it is much better to know now than in month four.

Can I just buy the products without joining anything?

Yes, and plenty of people should. The full range is at MAKE Wellness, and buying as a customer is a complete ending in itself. Nobody follows up to recruit you, and there is no version of this where being a customer is treated as a step toward something else.

What would you tell someone starting from zero today?

Publish something useful about the thing you actually do, in your own voice, and keep doing it for longer than feels reasonable before you judge it. The reason two people found me while I was in another country is that there was something of mine to find. That is the whole trick, and it is not much of one.
