The Quiet Work Behind a Borrowed Wheelchair

A wheelchair comes back to the depot a little broken, a little worn, carrying the quiet evidence of having been needed. My job starts right there, at the part nobody photographs.

I work as a medical equipment advanced technician for the Canadian Red Cross, in a program with a plain and accurate name: the Health Equipment Loan Program, or HELP. The idea behind it is almost startlingly simple. If you are recovering from surgery or an illness and you need a wheelchair, a walker, a hospital bed, a pair of crutches, you can borrow it, short term, on a donation basis, so that you can recover at home instead of staying somewhere else to do it. Across British Columbia and Yukon, tens of thousands of people lean on that arrangement every year. Almost none of them ever see the part I do.

The journey of one wheelchair

Take a single wheelchair, though you could put a walker or a hospital bed in its place and the story would barely change. Someone borrowed it for a few weeks while they got back on their feet, and now it has come back to the depot. It is dusty. A footplate is bent from meeting a doorway too hard. One caster has picked up a wobble. The seat has the particular wear of having held a real person through a difficult stretch of their life.

That chair does not go back out the door in that condition. It comes to the bench. I clean it the way you clean something a stranger will soon trust with their whole body. I check the frame for cracks, the brakes for bite, the tires for tread, the folding mechanism for the smooth action it is supposed to have. I straighten the footplate or I replace it. I track down the wobble. I tighten what came loose and swap out what wore through, and then I check it all again, because by then it has to do more than look fine. It has to carry the next person's full weight, on their worst day, without giving them one reason to wonder whether it can.

Why "in good repair" is the entire job

There is a phrase in this work that sounds like paperwork and is actually the whole point. In good repair. It is easy to read straight past until you sit with what the failures would mean. A walker that wobbles is a fall waiting to happen. A brake that does not hold puts a person on the floor of their own kitchen with nobody there. So the care goes into the parts that no one will ever notice, which is exactly the sign that I did it right. Good equipment is invisible. It simply works, and the person using it gets to spend their attention on their recovery instead of their gear.

That invisibility used to bother me a little, early on. You put real attention into something and the highest compliment it can earn is that nobody ever thinks about it again. I have come to love that about the job. It is the same reason the work stays with me long after I clock out.

The people you do not meet

Most days I never meet the person who ends up using what I just repaired. The chair leaves the depot, it goes out into a city or a small town somewhere on the Island or beyond, and it does its plain and necessary job in a house I will never stand in. Tens of thousands of people a year, and I could not pick a single one of them out of a crowd.

I used to think you needed to see the face to feel the meaning. You do not. I send a sound wheelchair out the door, and somewhere a person I will never meet gets through a hard stretch inside their own four walls, with a little more dignity and a little more independence than they would have had otherwise. That is enough. Most days it is more than I expected this work to give me.

The same gesture, smaller and closer

When I produce a ballet in Mexico and give it away, people understand the romance of it at once. A stage, a curtain, a donation. The wheelchair is that same gesture with the romance stripped off, and the stripped-down one is the version I keep coming back to. There is no audience for a well-greased caster. There is only a stranger, weeks from now, who never has to think about it. It is one more of the small things I keep trying to aim the same way, and the quietest of them might be my favourite.
