A Breath of Fresh Air

A family sent our local Red Cross a thank-you card after two hard months with a hospital bed. They could not remember my name, but they remembered how I made them feel. On the quiet satisfaction of helping your community with whatever you have.

Some mail you open standing in the kitchen and forget by dinner. And then some mail stops you cold.

Today a thank-you card arrived, addressed to our local Red Cross. A family had a hospital bed and a commode from us for two months. The bed had to be moved, then more rails added. And near the end, after thanking everyone involved, they wrote this line: "The young man from Brazil was a breath of fresh air. (Sorry I can't remember his name)"

That young man from Brazil is me.

What my work actually looks like

I work as a medical equipment technician for the Canadian Red Cross here in Courtenay, BC. Most days that means delivering hospital beds, commodes, walkers, and all the unglamorous equipment that lets someone recover or rest at home instead of in a hospital ward. I move beds through doorways that barely fit them. I add rails. I show a tired family member how the bed remote works for the tenth time, patiently, because it is their first time and it matters.

Nobody writes songs about this work. It does not photograph well. But a card like this one says what it actually is: showing up for people during the hardest weeks of their lives and making those weeks, in their own words, "less stressful."

Helping rarely looks like the posters

I think a lot of people hold back from helping because they picture something grand, some special skill or a wide-open Saturday. The real version is smaller. It looks like carrying a bed frame up a porch in the rain. It looks like answering the same question twice without sighing. It looks like noticing the commode sits too far from the bed and moving it without being asked.

Whatever you can do is enough. An hour a week. A strong back. A calm voice on the phone. A meal left at a door. The families on the receiving end do not grade your contribution. They remember that someone came.

The line I will keep

They did not remember my name, but they remembered how I made them feel.

I keep turning that over. We spend so much energy trying to be known, followed, credited. And here is the truth in looping cursive on a folded card: what people carry with them is not your name. It is the feeling you left in the room. A breath of fresh air. That is the whole job description, at the Red Cross and honestly in most of life.

What the card says

The handwriting is the old-fashioned kind, and even my Canadian boyfriend could not read it, so here is the full text:

"Oct. 13, 2026. Thank you to all involved with our local Red Cross. We had the use of the hospital bed + commode for 2 months. The bed had to be moved + then more rails added. The young man from Brazil was a breath of fresh air. (Sorry I can't remember his name). It was a difficult time for us but you all made it less stressful."

I blurred the signatures in the photo. The family wrote this for the Red Cross, not for the internet. The words are what matter.
